Successfully Concluded Awareness Campaign on Adoption of Efficient Cooking Stoves.

Nari Chetana Kendra Nepal (WACN) recently concluded a successful awareness campaign spanning from November 1 to December 19, 2023. Focused on promoting the adoption of Efficient Cooking Stoves (EPCs), the initiative targeted two key districts in Nepal—Kathmandu and Kavrepalanchowk. Specifically, the campaign covered Buddhanilkantha, Banepa, Panauti, Dhulikhel, Namobuddha, and Bethanchowk through Savings and Credit Co-operatives (SACCOs).

This impactful program reached 911 beneficiaries across 15 SACCOs associated with WACN. Participants gained insights into the benefits of transitioning from traditional cooking methods (wood, LPG) to electric appliances, with a particular focus on reduced cooking hours and lower fuel costs. The campaign also emphasized the socio-economic and environmental advantages of embracing clean energy at both local and national levels.

During the sessions, attendees were educated on the safe use of electric pressure cookers to mitigate potential risks. The program outlined the distribution plan for 1800 electric pressure cookers to SACCO members, along with details about available subsidies.

Post-campaign, more than half of the beneficiaries expressed interest in adopting electric cooking appliances, although some cited financial concerns. The overarching goal of the initiative is to encourage the widespread use of clean cooking solutions, particularly EPCs. This not only improves women’s health but also contributes to climate and environmental protection, empowers women, and offers time and cost savings for consumers.
As a positive outcome, 45 representatives from the 15 SACCOs will have job opportunities as maintenance and repair workers. Each SACCO will transform into a network and service
